Toshogu Shrine (before Yomeimon Gate)

Toshogu Shrine is a massive complex of heavily decorated buildings which serve as the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was the was the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate which ruled Japan until the Meiji Restoration about 250 years later. Many of the buildings were constructed by his grandson Iemitsu.

Behind our fearless leader Frank, you can see one of the storehouses, decorated with elephant carving.

One of the more famous carvings: "Hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil."

Through the Torii gate you can see another gate, Yomeimon Gate,  which, unfortunately was covered for renovations. It is supposed to be extremely ornate.

The wall surrounding the covered gate was also rather ornate.
