Van Mieu is a temple dedicated to Confucius which is why it is known as the Temple of Literature.
It was established in the 1000s, though the stone lists of PhD scholars only exist from the 1400s to the 1700s.
The grounds are divided into several courtyards, with a path down the center.
Except for this last courtyard, which has a pond in the center. On the sides of the pond are the tablets with the names of scholars.
Each tablet sits on a turtle.
Many of the turtles are slightly different, which makes them interesting to look at.
The last courtyard is where the temple is located.
The left and right of the main temple courtyard had buildings containing shops. These shops were selling the same tourist crap that one could find on the streets anywhere. I was disappointed there wasn't an single book to be found, nothing talking about Confucianism, just souvenirs unrelated to the temple.
So I backtracked and headed back to the lotus ponds.
I like lotus flowers.
As we were leaving, a group of students who had just graduated were entering the temple grounds for photos and I assume to say a prayer of thanks.
