Similar to having their own version of the Champs-Elysées, Vientiane also has their own version of the Arc de Triomphe, Patuxai Victory Monument, which sits in the center of a rotary/traffic circle/roundabout.
The arch is sometimes referred to as the vertical runway because the concrete used in its construction was donated by the US for the construction of an airport runway, but this was built instead.

The Vientiane arch isn't nearly as large, but one can also climb up to the top, about 7 stories up. Though in true southeast Asian spirit, many of the landings on the way up have little souvenir shops.
