The White Temple

The White Temple in Chiang Rai, or Wat Rong Khun looks like a fairy tale castle. It was built by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat in 1997, though work continues on the grounds and other buildings. It is an actual temple, but a lot of the imagery is a modern take on Thai Buddhist art, with modern pop culture references thrown in. The gleaming white structure and sculptures are intricate and interesting to examine.

I really enjoyed this temple, it was a nice break from the colorful, glittery, what to me is over the top decoration of most Thai temples. The imagery was unique and different than most temples, which seem to be competing for the highest number of Buddha they can cram in.
