Chiang Mai: Doi Suthep

Once we checked in to our hotel in Chiang Mai, we boarded vans and headed to Doi Suthep. Technically it is called Wat Phra That, but everyone refers to it as Doi Sutheon since that is the name of the mountain on which the temple sits.

There is a long serpent staircase leading up, but I opted to take the funicular up and save the stairs for the way down.

Doi Suthep was built in 1383 as a Buddhist monastery and still is today.

The large gold pagoda in the center had different rooms around it with different Buddhas.

I did take the stairs down. The very bottom was lined with shops.

One of the rooms in the temple had a priest that was blessing visitors. He would say a blessing and then tie a white bracelet on your wrist.

It took me a while, but I found the right building.
