We woke up to an overcast, but warm and dry day in Hiroshima. What happened to typhoon Nangka? It struck land over Shikoku and lost a lot of steam. At some point it was downgraded to a tropical storm. When it did cross Honshu, it went in between Hiroshima and Kyoto. There were many train delays and cancelations as a result.
Kyoto was our destination that day, as there was a huge festival going on. However, our friend was there and she reported pouring rain. Not the sort of weather one wants to stand outside and watch a parade.
I had wanted to take a side trip for a few hours to Saijo, a town with several sake breweries, but that train line was shut down, too. So we elected to remain in Hiroshima for a few more hours, hoping the rain in Kyoto would subside.
That matter decided, we headed out for breakfast, and found this adorable cafe.

On Miyajima there is a temple at the top of Mt Misen that one can visit with a flame that (supposedly) Kobo Daishi lit 1200 years ago. The ropeway wasn't running and aside from the timing, it didn't look like the weather was going to hold up for a 2 hour hike. So we didn't go. Then I read that this flame was lit from that flame. So, in a way, I still did get to sew Kobo Daishi's flame, just in a different location.

After a few hours it was still raining in Kyoto but we needed to get going.
