I'm sure you are wondering what this pilgrimage temple thing is, right? There is a course of 88 Buddhist temples attributed to Kobo Daishi (remember him from previous posts?) around the island of Shikoku. Pilgrims walk the circumference of the island, visiting all 88 temples.

These days, instead of walking the 1200km route, one can take a bus tour, for the entire route or just a day trip hitting 10 or so temples.
Each temple has a number along the route. We visited number 51, Ishiteji, Stone Hand Temple. The very, very short version of the story is that a child was born holding a stone in his hand. There were many buildings, nooks and crannies and caves to explore.
