Exploring Fukuoka: Art museum and Gokoku Shrine

All too soon it was time to leave Nagasaki.

This time we were on one, two hour, fast train.

We grabbed lunch at Hakata station. I had a cute, chocolate filled pastry for dessert.

I know this will be a big surprise, but it was raining as we set out for the art museum. The museum was in a large park with a lake in the middle. As we walked, bundled in raincoats and ponchos and carrying umbrellas, I noticed a kitty hiding from the rain.

Fukuoka Art Museum had a nice collection of modern art, with many well known names. There was also a room with Buddhist statues I enjoyed as well as some of their potterry pieces.

Thankfully the museum kept us busy until the rain ceased.

A short walk away was Gokoku Shrine. The enormous wooden Torii gates were impressive.

Guardians!

The "ideal family"

Blue skies!
This shrine is dedicated to the spirits of the war dead since the Meiji Restoration. This has resulted in some controversy.

The people working there were very nice, and even though they were technically closed for the evening, they opened the door when we knocked and patiently stamped 8 people's shrine books. They also showed us photos of weddings and other ceremonies held at the shrine and gave us special shrine crackers before we left.
