The red Otorii gate that appears to float on the water is the famous symbol of Miyajima. The entire of Itsukushima Shrine is built over the water, with this Torii gate about 200 meters offshore.
During low tide one can walk right out to it. When we arrived on the island it was almost exactly low tide, so I just had to walk out. It sort of reminded me of Mont St Michel, except not potentially life threatening.

ReplyDeleteThanks. I got it from a vendor one hot day in Dazaifu when I got tired of the sun beating down on me. On the train last night I just added a makeshift tie (out of shoelaces) so it doesn't blow off as easily.
